Electrostatic Painting vs. Powder Coating: What Is Better for Metal That Is Already Installed?

I get this question all the time.

A customer calls me and says, "I need to powder coat my railings," or "Can you powder coat my gates?"

The first thing I normally ask is simple: Is the metal already installed?

Because that changes everything.

Powder coating is a great finish, but traditional shop powder coating normally requires the metal to be removed, taken to a facility, coated with powder and cured with heat.

That makes sense for new fabricated pieces, removable gates, metal furniture, parts and other items that can easily be transported.

But when we are talking about an existing staircase inside a finished home, hundreds of feet of balcony railings on a condo, aluminum window frames, storefront frames, elevator doors, a large entrance gate or fencing around an entire property, removing everything is usually not the best option.

That is where electrostatic painting becomes a very different solution.

What Is Electrostatic Painting?

Electrostatic painting uses electrically charged paint particles that are attracted to the metal surface.

For the right application, it gives us a very smooth and uniform finish without using a brush or roller.

But the machine is only one part of the job.

I always tell customers that the preparation is probably more important than the spray gun.

If the existing coating is failing, the metal has oxidation, rust is coming through, or somebody previously painted over a bad surface, putting another beautiful coat of paint on top is not going to fix the problem.

We first need to understand what is underneath.

Depending on the project, our preparation can include cleaning, degreasing, sanding, removing loose coatings, treating corrosion, repairing damaged metal, masking the surrounding property and applying the correct primer system before the finish coats.

This is especially important in South Florida.

Miami, Miami Beach, Sunny Isles, Aventura, Fort Lauderdale, Boca Raton and Palm Beach have humidity, strong UV exposure and salt in the air. Metal finishes here take a beating.

I see it every day.

When Powder Coating Makes Sense

I am not against powder coating at all.

For the right piece of metal, powder coating can be an excellent option.

If we are fabricating a new gate, new railing sections or removable metal components, sending the pieces out for powder coating may make perfect sense. You have a controlled environment and a very durable finish.

There are also specialized mobile powder coating systems for certain applications. We can evaluate those when the project calls for them. But they are not automatically the best answer for every finished property.

The situation is different when somebody already has a completed home, condominium or commercial property.

Imagine a custom home with a finished staircase. The floors are installed. The walls are finished. The glass is installed. The house is furnished.

Removing an entire staircase or railing system just to refinish the metal can turn a painting project into a construction project.

The same thing happens with condominium railings and large entrance gates.

You have to look at the complete project, not only the coating.

Why We Use Electrostatic Painting on Installed Metal

One of the biggest advantages is that we can restore many metal surfaces in place.

We spend a lot of time protecting everything around the work.

Floors, glass, walls, furniture, stone, landscaping and surrounding areas have to be masked and protected properly.

Then we prepare the metal and apply the coating where the metal is already installed.

That is a completely different process from removing everything and sending it to a powder coating facility.

We use this method for projects such as:

• Staircase railings and handrails and balcony railings
• Aluminum window and sliding door frames
• Entrance gates, pool fences and metal fencing
• Storefront frames
• Elevator doors and frames
• Architectural metal
• Commercial metal structures
• Condominium common areas
• Marine and waterfront metal

The exact coating system depends on what we are painting and where it is located.

There is no single paint that I use for every piece of metal.

Preparation Is Where Most Metal Painting Jobs Fail

When we inspect a project, I want to know why the old coating failed.

Is it oxidation? Rust? Bad adhesion? Wrong primer? Moisture? Salt exposure? Was the previous paint applied directly over a glossy factory coating? Was there contamination on the surface? Was the metal previously powder coated?

The answer changes how we prepare it.

That is why two estimates that both say "paint railings" may actually be for completely different jobs.

What About Previously Powder-Coated Metal?

We refinish previously coated metal all the time.

The fact that something was originally powder coated does not automatically mean it has to be removed and powder coated again.

A lot depends on the condition of the existing finish.

Sometimes the original coating is still well bonded and only needs the correct preparation before being refinished.

Other times it is peeling, separating or failing badly and much more aggressive preparation is required.

We inspect it before deciding.

I would rather tell a customer exactly what I think the metal needs than sell the same process for every project.

Staircases Are a Perfect Example

Interior and exterior metal staircases are one of my favorite examples.

A staircase may have dozens of individual pickets, rails, corners, welds and connections.

Painting something like that with a brush can leave marks and uneven areas.

Removing the complete staircase for powder coating can be extremely expensive and disruptive.

With the right preparation, protection and electrostatic application, we can refinish the staircase where it is installed and achieve a very clean finish.

We do the same thing with high-end handrails and architectural metal.

The preparation and masking take time, but that is how you get the result.

So Which One Should You Choose?

If you have a new removable metal part and access to a powder coating facility, powder coating may be an excellent solution.

If you have existing metal installed in a home, condominium, commercial building or exterior property, electrostatic painting or another professional on-site coating system may be much more practical.

There is no reason to remove thousands of dollars of finished construction if the metal can be professionally restored where it is.

That is really the difference.

I do not look at every project and say it has to be electrostatic.

I look at the metal, the existing coating, the location, the environment and what the customer is trying to achieve.

Then we decide what makes sense.
